The swimmer stands as a metaphor for today’s society. He represents the person who swims his laps every day, measures himself, fights to then shine on a pedestal. Often one misses the last ladder to the exit and drifts in the undertow of the water into the distance, hoping to come across shallow water. Symbolic images for people who are overwhelmed and perhaps drowned by the flood of information in social media.

Aids such as goggles and water wings may offer us safety and freedom of movement, yet they make us dependent – artificial supports for a merely perceived freedom. They symbolize temptations and addictions that promise stability while pulling us in deeper. The figures thus reflect our longing for orientation and recognition, as well as our fear of going under without these supports.
